It provides practical skills for accurately looking up codes, essential for medical coding and record-keeping. The flexible online format allows participants to learn at their own pace, equipping them with a thorough understanding of ICD-10-CM.
Course Objective: This ICD-10-CM course aims to develop proficiency in the coding system’s structure, conventions, and guidelines. Participants will gain practical skills for accurate code lookup, essential for medical coding and documentation. The flexible online format enables self-paced learning, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of ICD-10-CM for healthcare applications.
Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this 54-hour online ICD-10-CM course, participants will be able to navigate the coding system’s layout, apply conventions and guidelines, and accurately assign codes for medical diagnoses. They will develop essential coding and documentation skills, ensuring proficiency in medical record-keeping and compliance with healthcare industry standards.
Prerequisites: Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy is strongly recommended.
Methods of Instructions: Methods of instructions include lectures, discussions and practical hands-on exercises, students-controlled notes, reading materials handouts and online visual presentation materials through distance learning. Integration of technology is available and other related methods of learning will be fully utilized to achieve the objectives.
Methods of Evaluation: The student shall be graded based on testing, instructor observation, daily exercises and works, short quizzes, hands-on assessment and final examinations. Seventy Five percent (75%) is the passing grade for this course.
Training Delivery: This is a synchronous type of institution-based delivery and online-hybrid learning, guided by the principles of competency-based training. The students start and end together. This course includes face-to-face interaction and scheduled activities with instructors and students. This Online/Hybrid CBCS course incorporates two innovative software, namely: Moodle.org and Zoom.com.
Moodle is a virtual learning environment (VLE) that is free to download and access, and will serve as the virtual classroom. All documents related to the course, such as the syllabus, is housed in Moodle.
Assignments for each of the lesson, quiz, assessments, and announcements from the instructors will all be posted on Moodle. Students will also have access to discussion forums that will allow each of them to initiate dialogue with other students in the course and/or respond to a question or case study from an instructor after a particular lesson. The syllabus is available for the student to view as soon as he is logged in.
Zoom.com is a video conferencing system that allows the student to log in to view the class that is in session and participate in live discussions with the instructor and students in the classroom. The students will be using this application to “virtually attend” the class. The student will likewise be able to see and hear the instructor and view the PowerPoint presentations for each of the lesson. For access to Gotomeeting, the teacher will invite the students with the access code to attend the virtual class session. Recordings of the class sessions will be available for viewing during the next business day.

MODULE 1 - Getting Familiar with Layout and the Inside of ICD-10-CM
Understanding the layout of ICD-10-CM is crucial for accurate medical coding. This includes familiarization with its structure, chapters, sections, and coding conventions. Learners will explore tabular and alphabetical indexes, coding guidelines, and symbols, enabling efficient navigation and proper code selection for diagnoses, ensuring compliance with medical documentation and billing standards.
MODULE 2 – History and Development of ICD-10-CM
The ICD-10-CM (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification) was developed to improve disease classification and medical coding accuracy. Originating from the WHO’s ICD-10, it was adapted for U.S. healthcare needs, incorporating expanded codes and detailed classifications. It enhances clinical documentation, billing, and epidemiological research for better healthcare management.
Module 3 – Code Structure
ICD-10-CM codes are alphanumeric, consisting of up to seven characters. The first character is a letter, followed by numbers. The code structure includes categories (first three characters), subcategories (fourth and fifth characters), and specific codes (sixth and seventh characters). These codes classify diagnoses for health records and insurance billing.
Module 4 – Organization, Structure and Format of ICD-10-CM
ICD-10-CM is organized into 22 chapters based on body systems and diseases. The code format is alphanumeric, with up to seven characters. The first three characters represent the category, the next two define the subcategory, and the last two characters offer further specificity, detailing the diagnosis for medical billing and records.
Module 5 - ICD-10-CM Conventions and Coding Guidelines
ICD-10-CM conventions include symbols like “-” for codes that require additional characters and “[ ]” for inclusion terms. Coding guidelines clarify usage rules, such as sequencing primary and secondary diagnoses, combination codes, and exclusions. They ensure consistent and accurate code assignment, improving diagnostic accuracy and data integrity.
Module 6 - Other Coding Features of the ICD-10-CM
Other ICD-10-CM coding features include placeholder characters (X) for codes requiring additional digits, combination codes for conditions with related symptoms, and codes for external causes of injury or diseases. It also includes specific codes for maternity, newborn, and post-procedural conditions, enhancing precise diagnosis classification and healthcare data reporting.
Module 7 - ICD-10-CM Guidelines
ICD-10-CM guidelines provide rules for accurate code assignment, including proper sequencing of diagnoses, selecting the most specific code, and handling exclusions and inclusion terms. They address coding for ambiguous conditions, conditions with multiple codes, and guidelines for specific patient groups, ensuring consistent and accurate reporting for clinical and billing purposes.
